Personal Protection Orders - Apply to Pets/Animals in Michigan

In case you haven't heard, Michigan House Bill 4478 passed the House and Senate. It was approved by the Governor on May 3, 2016 and went into effect on August 1, 2016. This law allows victims of domestic violence to include their pets/animals in personal protection orders (PPOs), which will protect both humans and the animals they love from domestic violence.

A PPO can now also forbid a person from injuring or threatening to injure another person's animal, taking the animal from the person's possession, or retaining possession of the animal.

As a result of these efforts, Michigan now joins more than half of all states allowing animals to be included in PPOs. This was a very positive win for people and animals in our state!
